Overview:
The Board of Canvassers operates under Title 17 of the Rhode Island General Laws and the Home Rule Charter of the City of Providence. The Board’s mission is to protect the integrity of the electoral process and to effectively and efficiently administer the provisions of the Election Laws of the United States and the State of Rhode Island.
Register to Vote
The deadline to register to vote to cast your ballot in the election is 30 days before. You do not need to re-register if you are already registered to vote. However, you must update your information if your address or name has changed. Visit vote.ri.gov to update your voter information or if you need to register to vote. You can also download a voter registration form and mail it to the Board of Canvasser's office. If you are mailing the form through USPS, it must be postmarked by the deadline date.
Ways to Vote
- Vote by Mail:
- Voting by mail is a safe and easy option for voters who do not want to vote in person.
- Voters who complete a mail ballot application and return it, or apply online, by the deadline indicated on the application, will have a mail ballot sent to them to the address provided on the form.
- To apply online visit vote.ri.gov.
- Vote Early In-Person: Early voting begins 20 days before an election and is held at City Hall during normal business hours 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Voters will be asked to present a valid photo ID.
- Vote on Election Day: All polls open from 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. To find your polling place visit vote.ri.gov.

Acceptable Photo IDs include:
- RI driver’s license/permit
- U.S. passport
- ID card issued by any federally recognized tribal government
- ID card issued by an educational institution in the U.S.
- U.S. military ID card
- ID card issued by the U.S. government or State of Rhode Island, (RIPTA bus pass, etc.)
- Government-issued medical card
- RI Voter ID card

- Registered voter in Rhode Island
- Able to read the Constitution of the State of Rhode Island in English
- Able to write our name
